PRESENT SIMPLE
We use the Present Simple to speak about habits, facts and things that are true for a long time.
(Il present simple si usa per esprimere azioni che hanno luogo nel presente o che accadono con frequenza regolare. Si usa anche per esprimere affermazioni generali o assolute non riferite ad un lasso di tempo specifico.)
E.g I always sleep late on Sunday morning. (habit)
You are Italian. (fact)
We live in Italy. (something that is true for a long time)
He works in a bank. (something that is true for a long time).
To be, To do, To Have (Essere, fare, avere)
To be (essere)
I am we are
You are you are
He, she, it is they are
To have (avere)
I have we have
You have you have
He, she, it has they have
To do (fare)
I do we do
You do you do
He, she it does I do
The Present Simple is often used with adverbs of frequency and expression of time. The Adverb of Frequency is positioned between the subject and the verb. (Il present simple è usato spesso con avverbi di frequenza, posizionati tra soggetto e verbo)
E.g I always go (vado sempre....)
They never come (non vengono mai.....)
She rarely speaks (parla raramente....)
We often go (Andiamo spesso....)
Pronoun
In English we always need to pronounce the pronoun, because in the Present Simple, the persons are all the same, except for the third person singular (add “s”). (Il pronome va sempre utilizzato, nel present simple il verbo cambia solo con la terza persona singolare, con aggiunta “s”)
Interrogative and negative
In interrogative phrases the present simple is introduced "to do", "do / does; "to do" is also used for negatives
(Nelle frasi interrogative il presente è introdotto da una forma del verbo “to do”, usato anche per i negativi)
E.g. Does your father like to cook?
No, he does not (doesn’t) like to cook.
State verbs
The present simple is used for verbs that describe a state
(Si usa il present simple per i verbi che descrivono uno stato)
Thoughts (pensieri): believe, know, remember, think, feel, suppose. (credere, conoscere, ricordare, pensare, sentire, supporre.)
Feelings (sentimenti): love, like, hate, want, prefer (amare, piacere, odiare, desiderare, preferire)
Senses (sensi): smell, hear, taste, see, feel, touch (annusare, ascoltare, gustare, vedere, sentire, toccare)
Possession (possesso): have, belong, own (avere, appartenere, possedere)
Resume and example
