Form of the imperative

The imperative form is the same as the bare infinitive (the infinitive without “to”). It has only one form for both second person singular and plural 'you'. In the negative form you add 'do not' or 'don't'.

(La forma dell'imperativo è la stessa dell'infinito nudo (l'infinito senza "a"). Ha una sola forma sia per la seconda persona singolare che per il plurale 'tu', Nella forma negativa aggiungi 'do not' o 'don't)'

E.g Hurry up! you'll be late, leave the room immediately!

Don't disturb me; I'm working. - Do not smoke!

Use of the imperative

You can use the imperative to give instructions, commands, advice or to invite.

(Puoi usare l'imperativo per dare istruzioni, comandi, consigli o per invitare).

1. To give instructions

Push the button, Turn left

(Premi il pulsante, Gira a sinistra)

2. To give commands

Stop saying nonsense, don't lie.

(Smettila di dire sciocchezze, non mentire)

3. To give advice

Go to hospital, you are ill

(Vai all'ospedale, sei malato)

4. To invite

Please, come to the party, Have a drink

(Per favore, vieni alla festa, Bevi qualcosa)

Use of the emphatic ‘do’ with the imperative: you can use 'do' before the imperative to emphasize what you want to say

(Puoi usare "do" prima dell'imperativo per enfatizzare ciò che vuoi dire)

E.g. Do write down your name. - Do think of our offer.

Scrivi il tuo nome. - Pensa alla nostra offerta.
